Hidden Depths

Hello

How is everyone so far this summer? I am writing this as the intense heat of the UK has just broken and thunder is rumbling outside. A welcome relief.

Next week I will be showing some of my paintings in an exhibition called ‘Hidden Depths’ at the Byre Gallery, Torpoint in Cornwall. I am absolutely thrilled at this opportunity. If anyone is around for the private view on the evening of Wednesday 7th August I would love to see you. The image here from the invitation is a snapshot of my painting ‘and me’ which gives you a glimpse at some of the colours I will be showing.

The story behind the show had me thinking.  I saw a call to all artists on Instagram inviting us to apply to the Byre Gallery’s 10th Birthday exhibition. I remember reading the title for the show – Hidden Depths – and something struck a chord. I often see the layers in my work as hidden depths of narrative and mark making; the title gave me the courage to apply.

The process of entering an open call can feel like taking a massive leap of faith – how many people will apply? Will I be the right fit? Will someone see something they like in my work?  If the gallery charge for application, can I afford and justify this entry? While this process may make you a little anxious I would say that it is also a very good discipline. Entering an open call forces you to look at your work critically – to check your CV is up-to-date, that your photography is professional and the images are the right size, that your paintings are framed or cleaned up on the edges and it makes you ask yourself the question – are you ready? A bit like going on a blind date when there are nerves to the process but the process itself can be good for you and ultimately make you stronger. Part of being an artist is using marketing skills. Open call entries are another way to have your work seen and marketed.

Hope to see you in Cornwall!
