Hello, I hope you’re all well.
Just a short line from me today as I come to the end of a busy school term and the start of a long summer holiday.
I recently went to the summer exhibition at the Royal Academy and it really got me thinking.
I have always been afraid to enter a piece of work but I really don’t know what I am waiting for.
As we walked from room to room, often craning our necks back to see some of the thousands of pieces, I thought about how many entries had made it through the selection process. How many people had “felt the fear and done it anyway”. How many artists there were in this country. How, despite all these successful entries, the overriding feeling that each piece was different – that there was room for everyone – how many pieces felt fresh, relevant, current and exciting.
So what am I waiting for? I don’t think I will ever achieve the “perfect” painting. If I do find this sense of “perfection” I know I won’t just hang up the paint brushes and change career – rather strive for something else. There is no right time to enter a piece of work. There is no right time but the moment we are in today.
So, here’s to the right now and putting February 2024 RA Summer Exhibition entry deadline dates in the calendar.
Happy summer holidays my friends.
Kat xx
